Chapter 19

“You fought with that guy, Bruce?” Reva asked, resting her hands on her hips like a scolding mother. “You shouldn’t have wasted your time with him. He wanted a reaction out of you, and you gave it to him!”

“He did it to save his pride,” Samuel said, earning him a nudge from Bruce. “What? You act as if I’m lying or something.”

“Stop talking about it,” he grumped. “You know what? I don’t even know what I’m doing here. I don’t want to file a stupid police report.”

“Are you sure?” Matt asked. “Is the guy dangerous? Because if he is, it’s best to get him off the streets of Shadow Woods before he provokes another fight.”

“I don’t know, man.” Bruce sighed, pressing the ice pack firmly against his cheekbone. “We were playing a round of pool in the bar like we usually do. Then, the guy started chirping at us, just like last time. Push came to shove and I might have tossed a drink at him.”

“Bruce,” Reva sighed, closing her eyes. “You shouldn’t do stuff like that.”

“I know, I know! It was a mistake on my part, I get it. Samuel talked my ear off about that one on the ride here. Anyway, we got into a screaming match in the middle of the bar, then the guy reached over someone and punched me in the face.”

“It was a good punch, I have to admit it,” Samuel chimed in, scratching at the side of his head as Bruce tossed him a glare. “Fair and square. It’s clear he’s got a history of fighting.”

“And you’re positive you don’t want to file a police report against him?” Matt reiterated, gaze fluttering between Bruce and Samuel as he observed their reactions. Samuel winced, while Bruce’s expression contorted in reluctance. “Although, by the sound of it, you might get in trouble, too.”

“Hah. Told you.” Samuel smacked him on the arm again.

“What for?”

“Well, you just admitted that you tossed a drink at him. That could classify as an assault if the man wants to fight these charges.”

“So that settles it, then,” Bruce said. “I’m not going to file charges on that guy, but if I see him again…” He raised a finger. “I don’t know what I’m going to do, but it won’t be pretty.”

“Just say some mean words and be on your way, man. Don’t get into another fight,” Samuel advised. “Not worth blacking your other eye.”

“What happened after he punched you?” Reva asked, gently reaching over and taking Bruce’s ice pack, lowering it from his face and observing the injury. “Did he leave? Start fighting with someone else?”

“He punched Bruce and got out of there because the owner threatened to call the cops on everyone,” Samuel explained.

Reva gave Bruce the ice pack once more, pitying the way he winced once he reapplied the bag.

“And you guys didn’t figure out his identity, I’m assuming,” Matt added.

“Not really. We didn’t catch his name. I don’t know if anyone in the bar knows his name. He doesn’t look like a regular,” Bruce said.
